Integers

Negative numbers represent values below zero and positive numbers represent values above zero.
eg. above and below ground or sea level

1 + (-2) = (-1) is an addition statement
3 - (-1) = 4 is a subtraction statement

Measures of Central Tendency Part 3

Outlier - a value that is much larger or smaller than the other data value
the data may have more than 1 outlier or zero outliers

eg. outlier for - 3, 4, 5, 5, 6, 9, 33 is 33

Measures of Central Tendency Part 2

Mean - the sum of a set of values divided by the number of values in the set
eg. set is 6, 4, 8 and the mean is...
6 + 4 + 8 = 18
18 / 3 = 6
...therefore the mean is 6

Range - the positive difference between the largest and smallest values in a data set
eg. range of 1, 3, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 8, 8, 9 is...
9 - 1 = 8
...therefore the range is 8

Measures of Central Tendency Part 1

Median - the middle number in a set of data have been arranged in order

eg. median of 2, 5, 6, 8, 9 is 6

Mode - the most frequently occuring number in a set of data

eg. mode of 3, 5, 7, 7, 9 is 7

Adding Fractions with Like Denominators

You could simplify them. 4/9 + 2/9 = 6/9 or 2/3 <--(Simplified)

The denominators stay the same. Only the numerator adds.

1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4

Eg. 1/3 + 1/3 = 2/3

3/8 + 5/8 = 8/8 or 1

2. Min had a mark of 26 out of 31 on a science test. That same day, his sister got a mark of 45 out of 52 on a math test. Explain how to find out who got the better mark.

Min: 26 ÷ 31 = 0.838709677
= 83%

Sister: 45 ÷ 52 = 0.865384615
= 86%

Math Textbook Pg. 138

A baseball player's batting average is the ratio of the number of hits to times a bat. It is usually expressed as a decimal number.

The following data are for one baseball season.
Player Times at bat Hits
A - 605 194
B - 624 197

a) What is the batting average for each player? Round each number to the nearest thousandth.
Player A: batting average - 0.320661157
rounded - 0.321

Player B: batting average - 0.315705128
rounded - 0.316

b) Which player had a better batting average for the season? Justify your response.
Player A got more in his average by 5 from Player B
Player B got a lower average by 5 to Player A
